Yesterday, we were thrilled to welcome award-winning author and illustrator (and mother-and-son duo!) Carole and Jeffery Boston Weatherford as our 2025–26 Gordon Berman ’68 Memorial Lower School Resident Authors.

Carole is a prolific children’s author and poet from Baltimore, Maryland. Her 80-plus books have garnered two NAACP Image Awards and 18 American Library Association Youth Media Awards, including a Newbery Honor, a Coretta Scott King Award, and four Caldecott Honors. She has collaborated with her son, Jeffery, on three books, including Kin: Rooted in Hope and You Can Fly: The Tuskegee Airmen. Jeffery is an award-winning illustrator and performance poet who has spoken and exhibited around the world.

Throughout the day, Carole and Jeffery held storytelling sessions for our Lower School students. From creating sidewalk chalk illustrations on the Kindergarten playground to participating in call-and-response poetry and rap performances, the visit had something for everyone. Students also learned about voices of change, the “ingredients of storytelling,” and the importance of practice. Thanks for joining us, Carole and Jeffery!
