Longtime Librarian Laura Amy Schlitz Receives Rave Reviews for her Latest Book

Longtime Park Lower School librarian Laura Amy Schlitz’s latest book, The Winter of the Dollhouse, recently received a wonderful review from The New York Times. Congratulations to Laura!

Laura’s latest and 10th book is a captivating coming-of-age story with a fairy-tale ending. Catherine Hong writes for The New York Times Book Review:

The Newbery medalist Laura Amy Schlitz is a masterly storyteller best known for her historical fiction…Her new middle grade novel, “The Winter of the Dollhouse,” though set in the present, has the fully drawn characters, emotional pull and timeless feel of her other works, which make it old-fashioned in the best way.”

A librarian in Park’s Lower School library for more than 30 years, Laura is a nationally recognized children’s author. In 2008, she won the Newbery Medal for Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village, a series of monologues she wrote for fifth grade classes at Park. A novel, Splendors and Glooms, was a 2013 Newbery Honor winner. The Hired Girl, published in 2015, won a Gold Medal in the Sydney Taylor Book Award’s Teen category, a National Jewish Book Award for Young Adult Literature, and a Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction. Amber and Clay earned five starred reviews and was named to several lists of best books for children and middle grades, including Wall Street JournalKirkus ReviewsHorn Book, and Booklist. It was given an Honor in the annual Charlotte Huck Award for Outstanding Fiction for Children, National Council of Teachers of English. 

Laura will return to Park School on Tuesday, November 4 to meet with Lower and Middle Schoolers throughout the day, and will hold a book-signing event in the afternoon, open to all.
