Civil Rights Trailblazer Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton Visits Park to Meet with Students and Parents

This week, we welcomed Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton to campus to share her story and spend the day with our community. Dr. Hampton is an educator, scholar, philanthropist, and civil rights trailblazer who followed in the footsteps of the Little Rock Nine two years after they desegregated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
After the Little Rock Nine entered Central in 1957, the school board voted to close all public schools in the area to halt the practice of Blacks and Whites attending school together. Dr. Hampton joined Central High as the only Black student in her grade of over 500 students. For three years, no one spoke to her, looked at her, or smiled at her. She graduated alone, went to college, earned advanced degrees, chaired major foundations, and has wisdom to share with others. Her story is about seeing one another as humans, knowing your worth despite what others might think of you, and the importance of community and compassion.
On Monday night, the Parents’ Association hosted a conversation with Dr. Hampton for the entire community. Yesterday, she joined our Lower, Middle, and Upper School students in three assemblies, and met with the 4th and 5th Grade students for further discussion. Dr. Hampton’s words, lessons, and stories deeply impacted students of all ages, prompting thoughtful questions and conversation throughout the school.
Thank you, Dr. Hampton, for spending time with our community and sharing your important message with us.
