Animal Collective’s Josh Dibb ’96 Returns to Park for Assembly with Upper School

Category:

This morning, we welcomed Josh Dibb ’96, also known as Deakin, back to Park for an assembly with the Upper School. Josh is a musician/producer/mixer, a co-founder of the band Animal Collective, and is one of the creators of Goldsoundz, Park’s Upper School community music series — which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year!

During the assembly, two current student leaders of the Goldsoundz Commission Club held an interview with Josh and Adele Dinerstein, former Park K-12 Music Chair and US Music Teacher/Director. Adele and Josh answered questions about their experiences with music, performance, and the conception of Goldsoundz at Park. Josh also spoke about the hard work and passion it takes to pursue music as a career, finding inspiration in unexpected things, and working with the same bandmates since high school.

Josh, along with David Portner ’97, and Brian Weitz ’97, are three of the four founding members of Animal Collective. Brian, Josh, and David met as students at Park, while the fourth band member, Noah Lennox, was a childhood friend of Josh’s. They all joined up in high school and started making experimental music together, much of the time here on Old Court Road. Animal Collective is considered one of the most distinctive and influential bands of the 21st century, redefining popular music through their sonic explorations into uncharted territories.

Thank you, Josh, for joining us and sharing about your time at Park and experiences throughout your music career. If you are interested in learning more about Goldsoundz, Park alums in music, and our current Pre-K through 12 music curriculum, read our latest issue of Cross Currents here.
