Maeve Royce

Lower, Middle, and Upper School Music

Maeve teaches instrumental music in all divisions of the school, including concert bands and wind ensembles, our exploratory music program for fourth graders, jazz and pop ensembles, and a guitar class.

A native of Baltimore, Maeve began her music studies at an early age, playing in orchestras and jazz ensembles in Baltimore, Boston, and other east coast cities throughout high school and college. In 2005, she was awarded the bass chair in the Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Combo international competition, with whom she performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and Molde and Pori Jazz Festivals in Europe. This led her to transfer to the New School University’s School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, where she started her collaboration with her mentor Rachel Z. Maeve continued to perform with various groups on the New York scene and received her master’s in Jazz Performance from New York University Steinhardt.

“Maeve Royce is a phenomenal bassist in all respects — be it as accompanist or soloist, with or without bow, feeling, following, and often setting the textures of the tunes.”
– Bob Gish, Jazz Inside (NYC) October 2010

While in NYC, she also taught jazz at Lincoln Centers Middle School Jazz Academy, a city-wide program providing music instruction to talented youth including ensemble rehearsal, private lessons, music history and theory, and workshops with well-known artists. After a few years of touring, she relocated to Baltimore to pursue her own projects. During her time on the road, she has travelled to Peru to perform with Gabriel Alegria’s Afro- Peruvian sextet, in Paris with the Black Rock Coalition, and in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. with Rachel Z’s Trio.

She joined Park’s music faculty in 2012. In addition to coaching and directing ensembles at Park, she continues to perform with various groups in the Baltimore area, and loves to inspire and mentor her students. She and her husband Craig live in Canton with their twin daughters Aoife and Gwendolyn.

Maeve holds a B.F.A in Bass Performance with a minor in Composition from the New School University’s School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, and a master’s in Jazz Performance from New York University Steinhardt.
