Eighth Grade Speeches
For over 20 years, an annual rite of passage at Park has been Eighth Grade Speeches. Throughout their eighth grade year, students focus on the theme of advocacy as they are led through the process of constructing speeches in their language arts classes. They learn how to write an argument for a variety of audiences, develop a claim, select evidence to support their opinion, and consider other points of view. This process is reinforced by the entire eighth grade curriculum as teachers in all disciplines work in concert, providing counsel to students regarding subject matter and differing perspectives.
This project culminates in March when each student has five minutes to make arguments, to present facts, and to vigorously support opinions. Eighth Grade Speeches are an academic exercise that showcases students’ research, writing, and presentation skills.
